Description and contribution of the EU CBRN CoE
Unprecedented phenomenon: explosion, tremor, electric pole torn apart revealing a cavity releasing an unknown gas and a lava-like flow. Following the incident, experts trained by the EU CBRN CoE were mobilized for an inspection mission. In addition, equipment delivered by CoE projects was used by firefighters for site surveillance.
Results and impact
The intervention of the CoE trained experts has been crucial in providing advice, implementing measures, and ensuring protection for both first responders and the population from potential CBRN risks; local authorities were reassured about the national technical capabilities to handle such events. First responders appreciate the commitment of stakeholders in the management of the CBRN event for their clear intention to protect them from potential hazards during interventions.
Key lessons learned
Leadership, coordination, and selection of local experts reduced exposure of first responders to the danger source (ionizing radiation or radioactivity detection tests). The NFP was crucial in engaging relevant structures and soliciting knowledgeable local experts trained in CoE projects. Multiple laboratories, whose technicians were trained under CoE Project 35*, are currently identifying the nature of the materials with the support of CoE international experts.
