Information on the accession to the EU CBRN CoE Initiative under the aegis of the Regional Secretariat for Central Asia came in November 2020 not long after the completion of the 13th EU CBRN CoE Regional Round-Table Meeting for Central Asia, where representatives of Kazakhstan also took part.

Commenting on the accession of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the EU CBRN CoE Initiative, the Head of the Regional Secretariat for Central Asia Mr. Bakhtiyor Gulyamov mentioned:
“It was delightful to learn that the Republic of Kazakhstan has joined the EU CBRN CoE Initiative. As the Head of the EU CBRN CoE Regional Secretariat for Central Asia, I sincerely welcome the designated Kazakhstani National Focal Points (NFPs) to the EU CBRN CoE network in Central Asia. I am confident that together we will be able to enhance intra- and inter-regional cooperation on minimising CBRN risks and deliver tangible and sustainable results for Central Asia.”

To note, already on 12 March 2020, the CBRN CoE Tashkent-based Regional Secretariat for Central Asia has signed a Cooperation agreement with “M. Aikimbayev’s National Scientific Center for Especially Dangerous Infections” based in Almaty.

The Republic of Kazakhstan has also benefited from the support provided by the EU CBRN CoE Project 53 titled 'Strengthening the National Legal Framework and Provision of Specialized Training on Bio-Safety and Bio-Security in Central Asian Countries'.
Project 53, implemented by the International Science and Technology Centre (ISTC) based in Nur-Sultan, has been very valuable. In total, 88 master-trainers received specialized trainings on bio-safety and bio-security in countries of Central Asia, including Kazakhstan. The national institutions such as the “M. Aikimbayev’s National Scientific Center For Especially Dangerous Infections” under the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan has received laboratory equipment and supplies, which are currently being used for the detection of coronavirus within the population.

Kazakhstan is the largest country in Central Asia and the ninth largest country in the world. It has a population of some 18.3 million inhabitants. The full-fledged participation of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the CBRN CoE Initiative under the auspices of the Regional Secretariat in Central Asia will become mutually enriching and contribute to reinforcing CBRN safety and security not only at the national but also at the regional and international levels.

This has become especially relevant with the spread of the coronavirus around the globe and its dire consequences for the population of many countries.
