Description and contribution of the EU CBRN CoE

With EU CBRN CoE support, the Malawi CBRN national team finalized in September 2022 its CBRN National Action Plan (NAP), which was later on approved by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in December 2022. The adoption of the NAP, a process that started in 2017, is a milestone as is the first action plan that comprehensively deals with CBRN issues in one document.

Results and impact

The NAP will ensure a coordinated approach in developing a CBRN Risk Mitigation Strategy that includes all the relevant measures to deal with CBRN matters. It will also help in monitoring progress and ensure a proper accountability mechanism. Thus enabling the country to be fully prepared in dealing with CBRN risks and threats.

Key lessons learned

The finalization and adoption of the NAP was made possible due to the commitment and dedication of the CBRN National Team and the support given to the National Focal Point by the responsible Ministry (Ministry of Foreign Affairs). The designation of coordinators for each section also helped to speed up the finalization process.
