Description and contribution of the EU CBRN CoE

CoE Project 821 supported a “Regional Train-the-Trainers (TTT) on Medical Preparedness & Response to CBRN Incidents in the GCC”, held in Abu Dhabi, March 2023. The training gathered 52 participants from the GCC countries2, including 1st and 2nd line responders responsible managing CBRN casualties. It aimed to adopt a Schools of Excellence curriculum that uses the expertise, network, methodology and training materials developed in CoE projects.

Results and impact

The TTT course provided prospective trainers with advanced, specialized training on emergency medical assistance for CBRN events; these trainers will then train 1st and 2nd line medical response teams in their countries.

A first module provided an overview of CBRN events. The second module focused on the application of specialised CBRN medical assistance and the management of injuries.

Key lessons learned

  • Capacity-building of 52 prospective trainers in CBRN emergency medical preparedness and response, who are now equipped to train 1st and 2nd line medical response teams.
  • Establishment of a multi-agency regional network that will offer internationally recognised training programmes.
  • Other GCC countries are coordinating similar activities at national level as part of a potential 2nd phase of this initiative.
