Between 14 April and 15 May 2025, Bosnia and Herzegovina conducted its first national forensic training programme focused on CBRN crime scene response. Organised on Entity level, at the Police Academy of the Ministry of Interior of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the training was a key step toward strengthening national capacity to investigate and respond to incidents involving chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear materials.
Inspired by the EU CBRN CoE Initiative Projects 57 and 58, and held under the strategic coordination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the initiative marked the first time such training was developed and delivered using domestic resources.
A national effort grounded in experience
The month-long course, titled “Forensic Processing of a Crime Scene in a Specific HBRN Environment – CBRN Crime Scene 2025”, was led by two CBRN forensic trainers from Project 57, now serving as team management staff, alongside five other experts from the Federal Police Directorate. Together, they trained 15 colleagues from across key police departments: forensics, operational criminal technique, special forces, drug enforcement, and protection units.
The training covered the fundamentals of CBRN forensics at the crime scene. It concluded with a final skills demonstration on 16 May, showcasing techniques such as counter-diversion checks, identification of radiological/nuclear and chemical agents, and response to biological agents including decontamination procedures.
Sustaining national forensic capability
To ensure sustainability, the Federal Police Directorate will train a back-up team by the end of 2025. This continued commitment reflects Bosnia and Herzegovina’s readiness to further develop its national capacity to respond to CBRN incidents, not only through forensics, but also through criminal investigations and judicial processes.
All 17 members of the forensic team were awarded certificates by the Federal Minister of Interior and the Director of the Police Academy.
