The study of the legislations, regulations and relevant international standards are important as well as to evaluate and review existing policies on laboratory biotechnology, laboratory bio-safety and laboratory bio-security.
Bio-safety is an important issue in Southeast Asian countries because investment in biotechnology is assuming greater significance in the region’s economies, bringing with it more scientists and laboratories to support pathogen research. For example, a lot of plans to expand its existing biotechnology infrastructure as well as numerous research facilities and culture collections.
A Bio-safety Database based on the results of the assessment and inventory on the current use of biotechnology, on the capacity building related to the safe use of biotechnology and microorganisms in laboratory as well as an harmonization of risk assessment and risk management play a key role.
In order to share and strengthen experience between EU and South East Asian countries in the field of Bio-safety and Bio-security the project has to pursue an important aim: know, exchange, and implement common understanding between European Union and Asian countries.
