Description and contribution of the EU CBRN CoE

In March 2023, Tajikistan finished the construction of a new CBRN Forensics Laboratory aimed at running forensics analyses of CBRN materials to strengthen the investigation of criminal cases.

EU CBRN CoE Project 53* supported the Centre’s launch with the provision of equipment for biological safety and security, delivery of training for staff on bio related issues and on the use of equipment for forensic tasks, among others.

Results and impact

Project 53 support has enabled Tajikistan’s CBRN Forensics Labs to receive different equipment relevant for CBRN forensics, including various technology to carry analysis, personal protective equipment, etc. Also, it is foreseen to develop procedures for the management and analysis of CBRN evidence in a crime scene investigation, building up on lessons learned from traditional forensics.

Key lessons learned

The establishment of the CBRN Forensics Laboratory, launched under Tajikistan’s CBRN Nuclear Safety and Security Agency, is at its outset. The CoE project support shows that new facility will require commitment to ensure its operation and sustainability, particularly for the continuous improvement of capacity-building opportunities and the availability of supplies needed at the Centre.
